Featured Poet - Michael H. Hanson

Michael H. Hanson, the son of a U.S. Army Sergeant and a Nurse, was born in Potsdam, NY, amidst the icy climes of New York State's Northcountry. He spent the first ten years of his life as an Army Brat, one of five, living in such disparate locales as: Taipei, Taiwan; Munich, Germany; Camp Drum, NY; and Fort Huachuca, AZ, before finally settling down in his mother's home town of Massena, NY. He began writing his first poems for the local newspaper at the age of 15. He graduated from Massena Central High School and spent a short stint in the U.S. Air Force. Michael went on to become a Film Production major at Syracuse University, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the Newhouse School of Public Communications in 1989.

Though he mostly dabbled in the writing of poems throughout the first two decades of his adult life, it was the convergence of three powerful events that finally opened his soul, and his heart, to the overwhelming passion of poetry. The sudden, unexpected death of his mother from pancreatic cancer, the difficult dissolution of a 12-year marriage, and a two week tour of Ireland (where he spread a portion of his mother's ashes on the west coast) lit a bonfire inside Michael, a creative conflagration that now burns intensely throughout his many evocative, beautiful, and haunting poems.

Michael's first collection of poetry "Autumn Blush" was published by YaYe Books in 2008. "Jubilant Whispers" is his second book of poetry. Michael currently lives in New Jersey where he spends his free time spinning introspective verse, and tales of the fantastic in his small but cosy garden apartment.
