With the city of wizards behind them, the small band of rag tag heros valiantly makes their way toward the other side of the planet. Not that hard a journey... for someone in an airplane. But Airplanes don't exist in this world. All they have are their horses, their feet and... a dragon? But their goal is beyond the ocean and before they can even hope to cross it a mighty desert must be dealt with, a vast laybrith of caves lies in the way and the gods are out to get them.
Dale’s force field flickered into existence as his suit detected danger and he braced for impact, his hands reaching for the wolf’s jaws. They crashed together and went down in a heap, rolling across the ground. Lines of crackling energy ran across the field’s outer surface where the wolf’s claws were scrabbling and Dale clamped his hands around the wolf’s jaws. They rolled to a stop with the wolf on top, pinning Dale beneath its weight.
Dale removed one hand from its jaw, reached down to its belly and grabbed a handful of skin. He squeezed with full strength and twisted his hand. The wolf struggled wildly to pull away. It jerked its head free, its eyes blazed and a blast of intense energy cracked across Dale’s mental shields. He flinched and punched the wolf’s throat with a force that would have shattered granite. The wolf howled and its body shivered, then shattered apart, a dark mist swirling about it and coalescing rapidly into a towering pillar of wind.
Dale scrambled to his feet, stepped into the middle of the whirlwind and fought to possess his opponent’s mind. Reality came apart and Dale found himself standing on an unbroken plane of glass which glittered in the light of an unseen sun. Before him stood a man slightly less than his height, with green glowing eyes and skin the color of jade. The man glared at him and threw a punch at his head. Dale spun to the side and smashed the edge of his hand down on the man’s neck from behind, knocking him to the ground.
The glass shattered under the man as he fell unconscious and a vortex of swirling air began, pulling the shards and both combatants, into its vacuum. Dale grabbed hold of his unconscious opponent and struggled against the suction. He moved backward across nothing, stopped after several steps and faced the vortex, reached out with one hand and tried to grasp its central core.
Gale-force winds slung shards of glass into him and Dale winced, then turned sideways. His arm stretched across the distance and he slowly forced his hand through the wind. The vortex fought back, increasing the speed of its whirling and pelting him with glass. Dale grimaced as several of the shards breached his shielding and struggled not to lose concentration.
Time stretched to infinity as both combatants fought their battle of wills, then Dale felt the resistance give and he grasped something cold and hard. He squeezed, crushing the object in his grasp and the vortex shuddered. He squeezed harder. The vortex shivered and failed, falling silent as the object disintegrated in his grasp.
Dale blinked and realized he was standing in the desert once more. The wolf was gone, as was the rise. A man dressed in green, with light skin and dark brown hair, was lying crumpled on the ground next to Kaowin. Dale sucked in a deep breath through his nose and let it out slowly, trying to calm his anger.
The man stirred and a moan escaped his lips, then he pushed himself up on one arm and looked around in confusion. Realization dawned and he paled and looked fearfully up at Dale, holding one arm up in front of his face. Dale crossed his arms and glared down at him. “Is this what you call safe passage? What were you going to do with Kaowin?”
The man gulped and shook his head. “N-nothing,” he stammered, his eyes locked on Dale’s face.
