Whether a life form is human or otherwise, there are certain temptations that will forever trap a mortal soul. The urge to reproduce is one. All mortal species feel it. The urge to explore is another. Most species of higher intelligence will fall into that trap at some time. Then there is the urge to play at being omnipotent. The most successful of intelligent species usually go for that one as well. The fundamentals of existence are like a precious jewel ever coveted by these most successful of intelligent species. Gravity is usually the first to be conquered. Then, perhaps, the limits of longevity are ventured. Finally, those species who survive such experiments will, at one time or another, approach time with their refined intellects and engineered genes. They will tinker with the constructs of the cosmos until they find that – lo! – time itself can be manipulated. No being is truly immortal, of course, but we have come close. We are among those few who are able to watch time and space, and narrate to those who are interested. You may call us the Narrators if you wish. We watch, but never intervene. Journeys in time must be exciting, you say? Oh, to have the complete and utter freedom to roam wherever, whenever one wishes. Yet we say that with freedom comes responsibility. Time is only interesting once the shackles of perspective have been released, and an examiner can float freely. Only then does this most fluid of dimensions become a river of possibilities where a single century can be explored in depth whilst the next i s skipped over completely. But time is linear to the human race – linear and elemental. That is how it is supposed to be. The Overman's Folly is a science fiction novel that everyone who loves genre fiction should have on their bookshelf. One of the best science fiction novels to come along in years.
